The Six Kingdom System
Listed above are the different Kingdoms to the "Six-Kingdom System of Classification." Throughout my page, the different Kingdoms will be closely examined and the anatomical and physiological characteristics of microorganisms and viruses will be seen. |
Taxonomy and the World of Microorganisms
The science of classifying organisms, called taxonomy, has two main purposes:
In our present classification system, there are seven main levels or taxa
-
kingdom - The highest taxonomic classification into which organisms are grouped, based on fundamental similarities and common ancestry.
-
phylum - A primary division of a kingdom.
-
class
-
order
-
family
-
genus - A group of species exhibiting similar characteristics. In taxonomic nomenclature the genus name is used, either alone or followed by a Latin adjective or epithet, to form the name of a species.
-
species - A fundamental category consisting of related organisms capable of interbreeding.
