The Six Kingdom System

Listed above are the different Kingdoms to the "Six-Kingdom System of Classification." Throughout my page, the different Kingdoms will be closely examined and the anatomical and physiological characteristics of microorganisms and viruses will be seen.

Taxonomy and the World of Microorganisms

The science of classifying organisms, called taxonomy, has two main purposes:

  • to identify organisms
  • to represent relationships amont them

In our present classification system, there are seven main levels or taxa

  1. kingdom - The highest taxonomic classification into which organisms are grouped, based on fundamental similarities and common ancestry.
  2. phylum - A primary division of a kingdom.
  3. class
  4. order
  5. family
  6. genusA group of species exhibiting similar characteristics. In taxonomic nomenclature the genus name is used, either alone or followed by a Latin adjective or epithet, to form the name of a species.
  7. species - A fundamental category consisting of related organisms capable of interbreeding.

Phylogeny: The history of the evolution of a species or a group of organisms
